Why Were Kids Who Can't Swim Allowed Into Ocean?

The families of the seven pupils who drowned in Diani on Wednesday evening have questioned why the children who didn't know how to swim were allowed into the ocean without life jackets.

Stephen Kariuki whose nephew was among those who died says the teachers who accompanied them should have ensured that they had life jackets on.

He says county governments at the Kenyan Coast should also ensure life guards man public beaches and that information on when the tide is high is clearly visible.

The bodies of the seven class eight pupils were flown to Nairobi from Mombasa on Friday morning and transported to the Kenyatta University Mortuary for their families to claim.

Rosemary Nduire viewed her orphaned grandson's body for the first time Friday at the Kenyatta University Mortuary and regrets raising Sh9,000 to send him on the trip.

"I didn't want him to feel like he didn't get to go because his mother is no longer with us. I'm not even on speaking terms with his aunt because she refused to give me the money and so I had to go to my chama."
