It is surrounded by the Western Ghats mountain range to the West and the North, with reserve forests of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve on the northern side. The Noyyal River forms the southern boundary of the city, which has an extensive tank system fed by the river and rainwater.
The eight major tanks and wetland areas of Coimbatore are namely, Singanallur, Valankulam, Ukkadam Periyakulam, Selvampathy, Narasampathi, Krishnampathi, Selvachinthamani, and Kumaraswami. Multiple streams drain the waste water from the city.
The city is divided into two distinctive geographic regions: the dry eastern side which includes majority of the urban area of the city and the western region which borders the Nilgiris, Anaimalai and Munnar ranges.
Palghat Gap, a mountain pass which connects the neighbouring state of Kerala to Tamil Nadu, lies to the west of the city. Because of its location in the biodiversity hotspot of the Western Ghats, it is rich in fauna and flora.
The Coimbatore urban wetlands harbours around 116 species of birds, of which 66 are resident, 17 are migratory and 33 are local migrants. The spot-billed pelican, painted stork, openbill stork, ibis, spot-billed duck, teal and black-winged stilt visit the Coimbatore wetlands on their migration.
Apart from the species common to the plains, various threatened and endangered species such as Indian elephants, wild boars, leopards, Bengal tigers, gaurs, Nilgiri tahr, sloth bear and black-headed oriole are found in the region.
The northern part of the city has a rich tropical evergreen forest with commercially significant trees such as teak, sandalwood, rosewood and bamboo. The soil is predominantly black, which is suitable for cotton cultivation, but some red loamy soil is also found.
According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, Coimbatore falls under the Class III/IV Seismic Zone, having experienced an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale on February 8, 1900.
Coimbatore has a pleasant climate due to the presence of forests to the north and the cool winds blowing through the Palghat gap in the Western Ghats.
The city has a tropical wet and dry climate, with a wet season lasting from September to November due to the northeast monsoon. The mean maximum temperature ranges from 35.9 °C (97 °F) to 29.2 °C (85 °F) and the mean minimum temperature ranges from 24.5 °C (76 °F) to 19.8 °C (68 °F).
The highest temperature ever recorded is 40.4 °C (105 °F) on May 5, 1983 while the lowest is 9.7 °C (49 °F) on January 8, 1912.
Due to the south-west monsoon winds passing through the Palghat gap, elevated regions of the city receive rainfall in the months from June to August. After a warm and humid September, the north-east monsoon starts from October lasting until early November.
The average annual rainfall is around 700 mm (27.6 in) with the northeast and the southwest monsoons contributing to 47% and 28% respectively to the total rainfall.
This periodic rainfall does not satisfy the city's water requirements throughout the year and water supply schemes like Siruvani and Pilloor maintain its availability during low rainfall months.
The summer season starts in mid March to early April, with temperatures noticeably rising during late March. It is at its peak during April and May, and subsides during late May or the start of June as the Southwest Monsoon sets in.
The winter season emerges during late November, with the weather getting drier and colder. The peak of this season starts after the December Solstice and lasts up to mid-January, i.e, the festival of Pongal in Tamilnadu, elsewhere known as Makar Sankranti and other names.
Temperature lows drop below 15 degrees Celsius during this period. After this, temperatures gradually rise until late February before the day becomes considerably hotter with rises of nearly 3 degrees Celsius found during this period as summer sets in.

INDIA: World Heritage Ahmedabad To Boost Tourism
The world heritage tag to Ahmedabad will help in promoting tourism and giving a boost to the local economy by creating more employment opportunities, Gujarat Urban Development minister said today.
A day after UNSECO inscribed Ahmedabad as India's first World Heritage City at a meeting at Krakwo in Poland, Minister of State for Urban Development Shankar Chaudhary said, "It is a matter of pride for us all.
With this, we have to become even more responsible towards preserving the city and keeping our areas clean as many tourists from outside the state and country will come here".
The guardian minister for Ahmedabad said that keeping the city clean was now the combined responsibility.
The tag will help promote tourism and employment. It will give major boost to hospitality sector. It is an opportunity to boost local economy, he said.
The government, he said, will develop a circuit which will join all heritage structures not just in Ahmedabad but also in areas around the city like Adalaj ni Vav in Gandhinagar, so that tourists visiting here could get to see a lot of other historic marvels.
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the tag has now put the city on the global map and it will help boost tourism.
"I would like to thank everybody who worked to achieve this. Because of the heritage city tag, Ahmedabad will now shine on the world map. It will emerge as an important centre for tourism," Rupani told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.
Leader of Opposition Shankersinh Vaghela called for those who hold "fundamentalist views" regarding the old city to shun such views.
"This is an opportunity for those who hold fundamentalist views regarding the heritage city to shun such views and work to build the city. I would request the Ahemdabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the state government to ensure that they work to preserve the city and not let encroachment destroy it," he said.
Mayor Gautam Shah said the AMC will frame a roadmap by consulting citizens, scholars and leaders from the ruling and the opposition parties on how to develop the heritage city.
"We will consult all stakeholders including citizens, scholars and political parties and create a roadmap on how to develop the city," Shah told reporters.
The UNESCO had yesterday accorded historic city of Ahmedabad as world heritage site, making it the first city to get the honour.

INDIA: Jet Airways Suspends Pilot Over Assault And Racisim
Jet Airways says it has suspended a foreign pilot from flying duty over allegations he assaulted a woman and hurled racist abuse at another passenger on a domestic flight.
The Mumbai-based airline confirmed the incident took place on April 3 on a Chandigarh-Mumbai flight, adding the pilot in question had been taken off the flying roster soon after and an apology had been extended to the victim.
“As regards the said incident, Jet Airways has noted guest feedback with concern and regrets the incident,” Jet Airways said in a statement on Wednesday.
The airline has, as per policy, initiated a full-fledged investigation, based on specific inputs from guests, concerned departments and agencies.
Cricketer Harbhajan Singh has weighed in on the scandal, although he clarified that he had not witnessed the incident first-hand.
“Not only was he racist, but physically assaulted a lady and abused a physically challenged man ... absolutely disgraceful and shame on @jetairways,” said India’s out-of-favour spinner on Twitter, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reprimand the airline and its pilot.

Scandals have dogged the airline industry in recent weeks, particularly in the United States after United Airlines drew global outrage for forcefully dragging a passenger off an overbooked flight.
Footage of the April 9 incident captured by fellow passengers went viral on social media and caused a public relations calamity for the carrier and airport officials.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and strategic partner Jet Airways, India’s full-service, premium international carrier, have signed a groundbreaking agreement with the Government of Maharashtra to promote tourism to the western Indian state.
The partnership will enable both airlines to capitalise on their strong links with Maharashtra and further propel domestic and international arrivals into the state capital Mumbai and beyond. It is the first time an Indian state has signed a tourism collaboration agreement with airlines.
The Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis presided over the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Mumbai today. The agreement was signed by Valsa Nair Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Government of Maharashtra; Neerja Bhatia, Vice President, Etihad Airways Indian Subcontinent; and Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways. It followed months of discussions between the leadership of both airlines and the state government on exploring ways to collaborate in promoting tourism.
Under the agreement, the three entities will pool marketing resources to participate in travel-trade events in key international markets such as the UK and the UAE, jointly promote ‘Destination Maharashtra’ through advertising campaigns, and organise inbound familiarisation trips for media and travel agents.
Etihad Airways and Jet Airways are key contributors to India’s thriving travel and tourism sector carrying the biggest combined share of international traffic to and from India with one in five travellers choosing either carrier.
Collectively, they operate five flights a day between Abu Dhabi, the UAE carrier’s operational hub, and Maharashtra’s main international gateway of Mumbai with domestic connections across the country. In addition, Jet Airways flies daily between Maharashtra’s second largest city of Pune and Abu Dhabi.
Maharashtra, the third largest state in India, is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. Mumbai ranks second after the Indian capital Delhi in terms of first port of entry for foreign tourist arrivals into India, and fifth in domestic tourist visits.
Commenting on the association, Shri Jaykumar Rawal, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra stated, "We are honoured to welcome this opportunity to strengthen our cooperation with Etihad Airways and Jet Airways.
This MoU is the beginning of a strategic partnership with two leading and most important international airlines to attract as many international tourists as possible. Together, we can create benefits for travellers and shareholders.
Our aim is to jointly put in place the best strategies and practices to increase Maharashtra’s marketing footprint and position it as the most preferred destination."
Smt. Valsa Nair Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Government of Maharashtra added, "We’re delighted to further strengthen our relationship with Etihad Airways and Jet Airways.
This is a landmark agreement that will provide valuable support for Maharashtra Tourism’s global campaigns and marketing activities, as well as some of the industry’s most important trade and business events. This unique and important partnership between Maharashtra Tourism, Etihad Airways and Jet Airways will boost the state’s image exponentially."
James Hogan, Etihad Aviation Group President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Being part of one of the world’s largest economies, Maharashtra has plenty to offer to business and leisure travellers.
We are therefore delighted to expand our links to promote tourism to this vibrant state, which we have been serving with dedicated flights for 13 years."
"This agreement represents the first time a state government has ventured into such a tourism partnership with the airline industry, hence we appreciate the opportunity to work with our strategic Indian partner Jet Airways on this breakthrough agreement.
Our combined operation with Jet Airways between Abu Dhabi and Mumbai, complemented by Jet’s widespread domestic services, is further testament to the importance of Maharashtra on our route map."
Naresh Goyal, Chairman, Jet Airways, said, "It is a moment of both pride and honour that the Government of Maharashtra has chosen to join hands with Jet Airways and our strategic partner Etihad Airways in this unique initiative of leveraging our collective resources and impact for strengthening travel and tourism to the state."
"Mumbai is Jet Airways’ home hub and the airline shares a warm and emotional bond with Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra.
We operate our highest number of flights from the city and have always positioned and promoted Mumbai as the gateway to the state and the country. Our mutual network represents a huge market that can be potentially accessed in support of this initiative."
Maharashtra is home to a diverse range of tourist attractions, from beaches, caves, forts, wildlife, tiger reserves, national parks and hill stations, to monuments, palaces, festivals, places of worship, and adventure sports. Mumbai, the international gateway to Maharashtra, is the country’s financial hub and home to numerous museums, architectural heritage and Bollywood, the world’s largest film industry in terms of movie production.
Since Jet Airways began operations from Mumbai in 1993, the airline has flown millions of guests to and from its main hub over the past 24 years.
Mumbai was also the first Indian city to be served by Etihad Airways with the launch of daily flights in September 2004. A second daily service was introduced in November 2013, followed two years later by a third daily frequency.
Etihad Airways has carried more than two million guests on the route over the past 13 years with key inbound markets including Abu Dhabi, London, New York, San Francisco and Chicago.
Etihad Airways’ Indian network to and from Abu Dhabi covers 11 cities that also includes Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.
Jet Airways offers the additional Indian cities of Pune, Lucknow, Mangalore and Goa to Abu Dhabi, as well as numerous domestic connections.
During 2017, Jet Airways is scheduled to launch flights from Kannur and Chandigarh to Abu Dhabi, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals and completion of operational readiness at these airports.
Combined, both carriers operate over 250 flights each week between Abu Dhabi and 15 Indian cities.

Headquartered in New Delhi, Bird Group is one of India’s fastest growing business conglomerates with interests in travel technology, aviation services, hospitality, luxury retail and education.
“Alpha Destination Management will run three main offices in Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai. In addition, four representative offices in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ahmedabad will be managed in cooperation with Bird Group,” Alpha Destination chief executive officer Ghasan Aridi said in a statement.
Aridi believes that the seven offices in India will significantly boost inbound tourists to Dubai. Established in 1996, Alpha Destination Management has managed to achieve significant targets and gain a major market share within the tourism sector of the UAE.
Last year, Dubai hosted around 1.6 million Indian tourists compared to 1.2 million tourists in 2014, showing a remarkable growth of 26 per cent. The first quarter of 2016 also witnessed a 17 per cent year-on-year growth in Indian tourists (467,000).
“Dubai is one of the most popular destinations for tourists from India and at the same time India is one of the most important markets for Dubai,” Aridi.
Dubai offers all the ingredients to attract tourists in the emirate starting from the world-class airport, airlines, range of hotels, exciting cuisines, and a lot more.
Upcoming theme parks in Dubai will take the city to another level in terms of tourists’ attractions. Specially, the world’s first Bollywood Park, which is scheduled to open in October this year, is expected to be a big hit among Indian tourists.
Last year, Dubai attracted more than 14.2 million overnight visitors, showing a 7.5 per cent increase over 2014, according to annual figures released by Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing. The figure means Dubai was the fourth most visited city in the world in 2015.
“By opening new offices in India, we want to help Dubai achieve a 20 million tourists target in the next five years,” Aridi said.
He hoped that Alpha’s new offices will see a significant impact on Dubai inbound tourists from India in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Air India is considering starting a direct flight to Washington as well as serving new cities in the US soon after it launches its services to San Francisco next month. The national carrier already operates non-stop flights to three US cities -- New York, Newark and Chicago.
"I have been informed by Air India that it is considering a direct flight to Washington," Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju has said. He was speaking at a function in New Delhi on Friday organised by Air India prior to the launch of its direct flight to San Francisco from December 2.
According to a senior official at Air India, apart from direct services to Washington, the carrier would be looking at the feasibility of connecting more number of cities in the US from various places in India. The official said the launch flight, both to and from San Francisco in California, has already been sold out and the demand was "tremendous".
Air India used to serve Washington via New York, but the service was discontinued a few years ago. The carrier also had flights to Los Angeles in California, which was discontinued before the merger of Indian Airlines with Air India in 2011. The non-stop Delhi-San Francisco flight, starting services from December 2, will be one of the longest with duration of close to 17 hours. Air India will operate B77-200LR plane to San Francisco -- the Silicon Valley hub.
"This new flight will be a boon for the Indian diaspora in the US West Coast, making travel easy and convenient for students," the carrier said in a release.
The flight to San Francisco will leave Delhi on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while the return service will be on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. With a three-cabin configuration, the flight will have eight seats in first class, 35 in business and 195 in economy.
Passengers from IT hubs of Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Ahmedabad and Pune will have seamless connection to the flight from Delhi, Air India said.
"The return flight from San Francisco will provide onward connections to cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Pune and Bhubaneswar," the release said.
Air India has flights to 34 international destinations spread across the US, Europe, Far-East and South-East, and the Gulf.

INDIA: Bullet Train,India To Get $ 12 bn Project With Japan
A Rs 98,000-crore project to lay India's first bullet train network between commercial nerve centre of Mumbai and Ahmedabad was today finalised at the annual summit talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.
"No less historic is our decision to introduce High Speed Rail on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad sector through Japan's Shinkansen, known for its speed, reliability and safety," Modi said at a joint media event with Abe.
He also greatly appreciated Abe's extraordinary package of approximately USD 12 billion (approx Rs 98,000 crore) and technical assistance, on very easy terms, for this project
The bullet train network will link India's financial hub Mumbai with Ahmedabad, the capital of Modi's home state Gujarat. Bullet train between the two cities will cut travel time on the 505-kilometre route from eight hours to around three.
"This enterprise will launch a revolution in Indian railways and speed up India's journey into the future. It will become an engine of economic transformation in India," Modi said.
Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar said Japan will provide 80 per cent of the funds for the project at 0.1 per cent interest rate for a period of 50 years.

JAPAN: Japan Poised To build India’s first bullet train
Japan is set to build India’s first bullet train, with Tokyo financing the project through an $8 billion loan to New Delhi.
The Nikkei, which did not cite sources, said the bullet train will link the cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad and that the two countries will issue a joint statement about the deal on Saturday during Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to India, where he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The report comes after Japan failed to win a high-speed train deal in Indonesia earlier this year, losing out to a Chinese proposal.
A deal with India would be the second successful case of Japan exporting its bullet train technology to a foreign market, following a deal with Taiwan in 2007, Japanese officials said.
Two officials from Japan’s trade and transportation ministries refrained from confirming the contents of the Nikkei article, only that the Japanese government was making “utmost efforts toward such an agreement”.
Abe, who departs Friday for India, is to tell Modi that Japan will provide one trillion yen ($8.1 billion) worth of loans during the next decade that would finance more than half of the approximately 980 billion Indian rupee cost of the project, the Nikkei said.
The introduction of high-speed links and bullet trains were one of the key campaign promises of Modi, who was elected in May 2014.
India’s vast rail network runs 12,000 trains a day, carrying 23 million people and connecting about 8,000 stations, but has suffered decades of neglect at a time of rapid economic growth during which car ownership has surged and low-cost airlines have mushroomed.
Modi’s government said last year it would open up the railways to foreign investment as they struggle to win back freight traffic lost to roads, coastal shipping and planes.
Last year an Indian passenger train set a new national speed record of 160 kilometres an hour (100 miles an hour) — just half the speed of 320 kilometres an hour that the Japanese “shinkansen” can reach.
