The new service has been introduced to meet the strong travel demand on the Johannesburg route, with increasing number of guests visiting the Seychelles archipelago.
Remco Althuis, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles, said: We are delighted to provide more choice to our travellers especially during the upcoming peak summer months.

SEYCHELLES: Mahe Is A Paradise But Stray Dogs, Spiders, Bats Do Exist, May Be Frightening At Night
Mahé is the largest and most populous island in the Seychelles, home to 90% of the country's population and its largest airport.
Mahé is the largest island (157.3 km²) of Seychelles, lying in the northeast of the nation in the Indian Ocean.
The population of Mahé was 77,000, as of the 2010 census. It contains the capital city of Victoria and accommodates 86% of the country's total population.
The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Mauritius.
Victoria — the national capital.
Beau Vallon — probably the most popular beach in the islands.
Takamaka — the second largest town on the island.
Other destinations
- Cerf Island
- Marnelle Island
- Sainte Anne Island
You can tour Mahe by Bicycle and metered Taxi as well as Bus.
Mahé's tallest peak is Morne Seychellois at 905 m (2,969 ft), which lies in the Morne Seychellois National Park.
The northern and eastern parts of the island are home to much of the population and the Seychelles International Airport which opened in 1971.
The southern and western parts have Baie Ternay Marine National Park, Port Launay Marine National Park, and University of Seychelles.
The Sainte Anne Marine National Park lies offshore, as do Conception Island, Thérèse Island, Anonyme Island and several smaller islands.
Mahé's forests have rare endemic plants found only in Seychelles, such as the critically endangered Medusagyne oppositifolia (the jellyfish tree), the carnivorous Nepenthes pervillei (Seychelles pitcher plant), and many unique species of orchid.
Mahé had a huge land reclamation project due to a shortage of housing, in the areas of Bel Ombre and the Port of Victoria.
Mahé's economy is mainly dependent on tourism. Air Seychelles has its head office on the property of Seychelles International Airport on the island.
The Port of Victoria is home to a tuna fishing and canning industry.
Accomodations in Mahe

Coral Strand Smart Choice Hotel, Beau Vallon, Mahe, Seychelles. located at Beau Vallon Bay- the best beach on the island with large a stretch of white powder sand and turquoise coloured water.
The hotel provides ocean views with some rooms close enough to toss a coin from your room into the sea and make a wish. Easy walking distance to the convenient stores and the famous Bazar Labrin on every Wednesday.
South Point Villas. Three fully-equipped villas with sea views and 1 - 3 bedrooms. Each villa has wireless internet access, entertainment system, large veranda and Weber barbecue.
Seychelles has a number of restaurants in Victoria that serve fresh food and meats. Juice is slightly expensive at $5USD per cup. Seafood is relatively inexpensive, and island curry meats are as well.
Unfortunately, there are not many stores open later beyond Victoria. Unless you happen to be near 24-hour stores, you will definitely want to stock up on food to eat during your stay or else find yourself late at night without snacks or food.
Mahe's nightlife is concentrated in Victoria.
Seychelles has a cellular service and fees for sim cards and internet/3g service are relatively low, $50.
You should bring a smartphone such as iPhone or even an iPad LTE so you have access to Google Maps and are able to call your hosts if necessary.
During night-time, bus service shuts down. The roads, paths and walk ways are excessively dark and you may want to keep a rechargeable flashlight with you if you have not rented a vehicle.
Some stray animals such as dogs, spiders and bats exist and may be frightening at night.

SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles To Fire 174 Airline Staff
Air Seychelles is planning to fire 174 employees, including nearly 100 cabin crew.
This is as part of the restructuring drive in the wake of turbulence within the Etihad Aviation Group, the Seychellois airline’s largest shareholder, following the demise of Air Berlin, financial troubles at Alitalia.
Also pressured by growing international competition.
The new redundancies plan was announced at the National Assembly by Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports, and Marine Maurice Loustau-Lalanne.
Opposition Members of the Assembly asked to postpone the layoffs until an agreement is reached with the labour unions.
Air Seychelles will also terminate recruitment for a further 28 currently vacant posts without hiring new staff members.
The cuts will affect nearly a fourth of the airline’s workforce, which currently numbers some 800 employees.
It is recalled that the carrier had previously announced it will terminate its last remaining long-haul service to Paris CDG on April 28 and will return its two A330-200s to AerCap.
Accordingly, one of the Airbus widebodies has already been returned.
Going forward, Air Seychelles will concentrate on developing its domestic operations, as well as regional flights out of Mahe to Masterton, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Abu Dhabi Int’l, and Mumbai Int’l.
The carrier will also seek to develop its ground handling and cargo units.

SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles Introduce New Passenger Handling Technology At Seychelles International Airport
Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, will be introducing state-of-the-art common-use passenger processing system (CUPPS) at Seychelles International Airport from today.
This investment provides greater flexibility for international airlines operating from the airport by allowing them to share common-use terminal equipment for check-in and boarding.
The airline – which provides ground-handling services to airlines operating from Seychelles International Airport – is currently upgrading its technology to ensure a smooth travel experience every step of the way.
The upgrade is being performed in partnership with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority and SITA, a global technology provider to the air transport industry.
The new systems will optimize the use of terminal facilities, speed up the flow of passengers and improve service levels for all international travellers flying from Seychelles International Airport.
Roy Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles, said: “The new common-use terminal equipment will enable Air Seychelles to connect to various Departure Control Systems used by other airlines operating to Seychelles, providing more flexibility to our ground handling operations.
Even more importantly, it will enable us to streamline the check-in and boarding process for all the international travellers that are handled at Seychelles International Airport, making sure they have a smooth experience.
This new technology from SITA follows the long list of innovative technological solutions which we have implemented to ensure improved guest experience.
Gilbert Faure, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority, said: Introducing cutting-edge CUPPS infrastructure and baggage management systems at Seychelles International Airport puts us on par with some of the most modern airports in the world.
Having a standardized system for handling passengers will improve the airport experience for all international travellers, irrespective of the airline they are flying with, which is a fantastic achievement.
We have developed a strong relationship with both Air Seychelles and SITA and are pleased to have worked together to install this new technology.
Maneesh Jaikrishna, Vice President Indian Subcontinent, Eastern & Southern Africa said: “Our common-use systems brings new efficiencies to Seychelles International Airport for both Air Seychelles and other operators.
This in turn will has a dramatic impact on passengers who will benefit from a smooth and seamless travel experience.”

SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles Stops Flights To Dusseldorf Cuts Paris From 4 To 3 Per Week
Air Seychelles’ has decided to stop flights to Duseldorf as well as reduce flights to Paris from 4 weekly to 3 per week from september.
decision to reduce their nonstop flights between Mahe and Paris from the present four services per week to three already from September while Duesseldorf flights will be axed altogether has thrown a spanner in the works of many tourism stakeholders banking on an increased flow of tourists from these two destinations.
Said Neil Kinnear, the CEO of Air Seychelles, when making the announcement about stopping Dusseldorf flights said We have made the difficult decision to suspend flying to Düsseldorf after an in-depth review of the route showed that the service is unsustainable.
Given the high number of airlines operating or offering connectivity out of Germany, the seasonal nature of the route where peak travel periods are outweighed by low demand during the off-peak season, the extremely competitive levels of fares and existing fuel prices, it is not viable for us to continue serving the market at this point in time.
In addition, the volume of connecting traffic from our partner airlines over Düsseldorf has not lived up to expectations, making it harder to sustain the necessary passenger loads to meet our commercial objectives.
Germany is an important tourism market for Seychelles and we will continue to work with our codeshare partners to offer excellent one-stop connections via Paris with Air France and via Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways‘.
Kinnear explain the rationale behind the reduction of nonstop Paris flights when he added: As a result of the weakened demand for air travel out of France, we have also taken the commercial decision to reduce our Paris service from four to three flights per week.
While passenger numbers are strong during the summer months of July and August, the declining demand as we enter the off-peak season in September does not provide the required level of support for our fourth frequency going forward, which operates mid-week on Tuesdays/Wednesdays.
The route will continue to be operated with a two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with flights operating on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays out of Seychelles and on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays out of Paris.
Jean Weeling – Lee, Chairman of Air Seychelles, said: Due to year on year increase of cost of fuel, an extremely competitive aviation market in Europe, and the high number of significant airlines already serving Seychelles through their connecting hubs, it unfortunately results in Air Seychelles being forced to consolidate these services.
Any passengers already booked beyond the dates given will be rebooked or refunded. Said the airline’s website:
· Guests holding tickets on Dusseldorf flights after 8 September, 2017 are invited to visit Air Seychelles website call center or contact their Travel Agent.
· Guests holding tickets on Paris flights departing from Seychelles on Tuesdays and from Paris on Wednesdays after 6 September, 2017 are invited to visit Air Seychelles website contactcenter or contact their Travel Agent.
Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, today announced that it will adjust its European route network.
As part of the adjustment, the airline will suspend its service to Düsseldorf from 10 September and reduce its Paris operation from four services to a three-per-week schedule from 12 September.
Roy Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles, said: “We have made the difficult decision to suspend flying to Düsseldorf after an in-depth review of the route showed that the service is unsustainable.

Speaking about the upcoming change in weekly frequencies on the Paris service, Mr Kinnear said: “As a result of the weakened demand for air travel out of France, we have also taken the commercial decision to reduce our Paris service from four to three flights per week.

ITALY: Government Will Not Save Alitalia
Alitalia’s staff rejecting a last minute restructuring bid to keep the airline afloat, has not only pushed the European airline to begin bankruptcy proceedings for the second time in a decade, but has also put Abu Dhabi-based Etihad’s European future in question.
Etihad paid €560 million for its 49 percent stake in Alitalia in 2014, the largest individual share of companies invested in the airline, and part of a larger €1.76 billion deal to recapitalise and restructure the company.
At its shareholder meeting on Thursday, the airline has indicated it will stick to its stated position: no more funds to prop up Italy’s struggling national airline.
Staff at the struggling airline are hoping for government intervention.
But Italy has said it will refuse to in and save the company by nationalising it.
And it isn’t hard to imagine that Alitalia going under will have a much bigger affect on Etihad’s business than it will on Italy’s economy, thus putting more pressure on the UAE’s national airline to act to save its investment.
Etihad is invested via equity in Alitalia, Airberlin, Jet Airways, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, and Virgin Australia.
But it is its European investments are its biggest source of concern.
With Air Serbia, Etihad invested $200 million in 2013 for a 49 percent stake and management rights for five years.
Air Serbia has managed to eke out profits that have grown to one percent of revenue over the last two years. But its profits come from a market where it is unimpeded from the threat of much low cost competition.
According to the Centre for Aviation, low cost carrier Wizz Air, with much smaller unit costs of operation, is beginning to make an entry in the Balkans which could increase the level of competition Air Serbia is currently facing.
Meanwhile, Etihad’s investment in Airberlin has yet to bear fruit.
Etihad has invested into the company four times since 2011, from raising its ownership from 2.99 percent to 29.21 percent, to buying the European carrier’s frequent flyer program for €70 million, all of its Austrian operations NIKI, as well as putting up €300 million in bonds.
Yet despite its shrink to survive strategy, the haemorraging airline reported a loss lost year that had widened 16 percent to €447 million from 2014.
Earlier this year, long time foe, Lufthansa, became a saviour of sorts when it announced a $100 million multi-faceted agreement with Etihad to streamline its European business and wet-lease 38 aircraft from Airberlin’s Niki for its Eurowings subsidiary.
The deal will help stem some of the loss that is expected to bear in on Airberlin’s results which will come out..
It has been suggested Etihad’s European debacle is what prompted the shakeup that will lead to CEO James Hogan and CFO James Rigney’s departure come the summer.
The airline is also speaking with turnaround specialist Christoph Mueller, who revived Ireland’s troubled Aer Lingus before moving on to bringing back Malaysian Airlines a year after two crashes crippled its business.
If Mueller is appointed, he will work with a new airline equity investment chief, Robin Kamark, to help draft a new strategy to save its European carrier business, after the previous appointee departed for personal reasons.

SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles Boosts Connections From China With A Series Of Charter Flights From Beijing
Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, has announced a series of non-stop charter flights between Beijing and Seychelles. The carrier will operate three return Airbus A330 services from the Chinese capital, as part
of an agreement signed with a Chinese tour operator Caissa. Flights have been scheduled to depart Beijing on 27 September, 4 October and 11 October and will provide convenient travel options to the Indian Ocean archipelago during the Golden Week national holidays, a traditionally busy travel period in China.
Last year, up to half a billion Chinese nationals are estimated to have travelled domestically and overseas during the Golden Week celebrations. The carrier’s Beijing service will complement the recently-announced charter flights from Chengdu, which Air Seychelles is set to operate in July and August. SOUTH AFRICA: Half-a-million Visitors In Durban Over Easter Weekend
In the sun and at the sea was the place to be according to around 500‚000 domestic holidaymakers made their way to KwaZulu-Natal over the Easter season.
Together with the 65‚000 international tourists‚ the two-week holiday period was expected to generate in the region of R700-million‚ said CEO of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal‚ Ndabo Khoza.
International travellers are were expected from the United Kingdom‚ Germany‚ United States of America‚ France‚ Netherlands and India.
This year‚ we are expecting more international tourists with a number of airlines that now fly directly to King Shaka International Airport‚ said Khoza. We are projecting an increase of 18.7% on our international arrivals.
Last month Air Seychelles became the 11th international carrier to offer direct fights to Durban following in the flight path of Turkish‚ Qatar and Ethiopian airlines.
In light of the current bus strike‚ Khoza said that they are unable to determine the impact of the strike on tourism at this time.
This will depend on how long the strike will be. Some people may opt to use a different mode of transport. We always urge people to plan their holidays in advance and if the strike persists‚ we will definitely urge them to take a scenic drive to KZN and enjoy the true splendour of the destination.
According to 2015 research undertaken by Tourism KZN‚ the most popular destination is Durban that can claim 39% of domestic visitors followed by Zululand at 19%.
In order to promote KZN as a safe destination‚ Tourism KZN has kicked off a multi-stakeholder campaign that includes KZN Liquor Authority‚ Department of Health‚ Sanral‚ South African Police Services‚ Road Accident Fund and the Road Traffic Inspectorate.
The campaign includes a “Driver Wellness” programme‚ and information on safety issues at all TKZN visitor info centres to help raise visitor awareness.
We have ensured that hotels have Travellers Tips booklets which carry a host of information on do’s and don’t’s‚ said Khoza. Also available on the KZN Tourism website is a QR code that can be downloaded onto smart phones.
“A good working relationship with SAPS and Durban metro police makes it possible to respond in cases of incidents involving visitors to the province‚ and provide necessary assistance.”
What was on in KZN over the Easter holiday season:
- Easter Indian Shopping Festival‚ Moses Mabhida Stadium‚ 7 – 27 April

- Ubunye Easter Weekend Bang at Muzuvukile Sports Ground‚ 14 April
- The Gwara Nation‚ KwaNdengezi Sports Field‚ 15 April
- Durban Picnic Day‚ Moses Mabhida Stadium‚ 16 April
- Cothoza‚ Nongoma Gardens‚ 16 April
- 6th Annual Uvukile Gospel Festival‚ Ugu Sports ground‚ 16 April
- Indidane Maskandi Festival Pomoroy Stadium‚ 16 April
- Handles Messiah‚ Opera Theatre‚ The Playhouse‚ 16 April

- Durban Ski-boat Club Festival‚ Durban Ski-boat club‚ 28 – 30 April
- Amabhubesi Rally 2017‚ Hazelmere Dam Verulam‚ 28 April
Meanwhile, On Wednesday morning‚ an opportunistic Durban thief rode off with a prized bike which had been parked outside a popular coffee shop when it was pilfered. Because it was modified to road racing specifications‚ the thief was able to make a hasty getaway.
Police detectives are now on the lookout for the suspicious “vehicle” – and owner Paul Kraus has offered a cash reward for information leading to its return.
Kraus said that he had stopped at the coffee shop after a training ride‚ leaving his black Cannondale Evo 6 just out of his field of view.
I parked my bike outside and got caught up in conversation with a friend. I couldn’t have been more than 10 minutes and when I went outside it was gone‚ he said.
My friend helped me drive around the neighbourhood but we had no luck‚ Kraus added.
Kraus‚ a top level amateur cyclist‚ said that the bike had been customised for him.
This is not something I want to let go of. That’s why I offered the reward‚ he said.
Cyclesphere owner Greg Alberts said that while the theft of Kraus’ bicycle had likely been the work of an opportunist‚ robbers knew there was money to be made from stealing expensive custom-made cycles.
I am pretty involved in cycling in Durban and I have worked with the police about bicycle theft. The bike that was stolen this morning was completely unique…there is not another one like it‚ and when they are stolen they never reappear‚ he said.
We cycle shops, all network and keep in contact and if someone comes in with a suspect looking bike we let each other know. This leads me to think that maybe it is a bigger syndicate that is sending them out of the country‚ Alberts said. One or two appear in pawn shops but the majority of them disappear.
He said that two weeks ago robbers had targeted a cycling shop in Johannesburg two weeks ago‚ stealing R2.5 million worth of bicycles.
Last week a cyclist was robbed of his bike worth R90‚000 in Durban North.

INDIA: Jet Airways Suspends Pilot Over Assault And Racisim
Jet Airways says it has suspended a foreign pilot from flying duty over allegations he assaulted a woman and hurled racist abuse at another passenger on a domestic flight.
The Mumbai-based airline confirmed the incident took place on April 3 on a Chandigarh-Mumbai flight, adding the pilot in question had been taken off the flying roster soon after and an apology had been extended to the victim.
“As regards the said incident, Jet Airways has noted guest feedback with concern and regrets the incident,” Jet Airways said in a statement on Wednesday.
The airline has, as per policy, initiated a full-fledged investigation, based on specific inputs from guests, concerned departments and agencies.
Cricketer Harbhajan Singh has weighed in on the scandal, although he clarified that he had not witnessed the incident first-hand.
“Not only was he racist, but physically assaulted a lady and abused a physically challenged man ... absolutely disgraceful and shame on @jetairways,” said India’s out-of-favour spinner on Twitter, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reprimand the airline and its pilot.
Strict action must b taken &such things should not be allowed or tolerated in r country.. #proudtobeindian let's get together and sort this

Scandals have dogged the airline industry in recent weeks, particularly in the United States after United Airlines drew global outrage for forcefully dragging a passenger off an overbooked flight.
Footage of the April 9 incident captured by fellow passengers went viral on social media and caused a public relations calamity for the carrier and airport officials.
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and strategic partner Jet Airways, India’s full-service, premium international carrier, have signed a groundbreaking agreement with the Government of Maharashtra to promote tourism to the western Indian state.
The partnership will enable both airlines to capitalise on their strong links with Maharashtra and further propel domestic and international arrivals into the state capital Mumbai and beyond. It is the first time an Indian state has signed a tourism collaboration agreement with airlines.
The Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis presided over the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Mumbai today. The agreement was signed by Valsa Nair Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Government of Maharashtra; Neerja Bhatia, Vice President, Etihad Airways Indian Subcontinent; and Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways. It followed months of discussions between the leadership of both airlines and the state government on exploring ways to collaborate in promoting tourism.
Under the agreement, the three entities will pool marketing resources to participate in travel-trade events in key international markets such as the UK and the UAE, jointly promote ‘Destination Maharashtra’ through advertising campaigns, and organise inbound familiarisation trips for media and travel agents.
Etihad Airways and Jet Airways are key contributors to India’s thriving travel and tourism sector carrying the biggest combined share of international traffic to and from India with one in five travellers choosing either carrier.
Collectively, they operate five flights a day between Abu Dhabi, the UAE carrier’s operational hub, and Maharashtra’s main international gateway of Mumbai with domestic connections across the country. In addition, Jet Airways flies daily between Maharashtra’s second largest city of Pune and Abu Dhabi.
Maharashtra, the third largest state in India, is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. Mumbai ranks second after the Indian capital Delhi in terms of first port of entry for foreign tourist arrivals into India, and fifth in domestic tourist visits.
Commenting on the association, Shri Jaykumar Rawal, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra stated, "We are honoured to welcome this opportunity to strengthen our cooperation with Etihad Airways and Jet Airways.
This MoU is the beginning of a strategic partnership with two leading and most important international airlines to attract as many international tourists as possible. Together, we can create benefits for travellers and shareholders.
Our aim is to jointly put in place the best strategies and practices to increase Maharashtra’s marketing footprint and position it as the most preferred destination."
Smt. Valsa Nair Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Government of Maharashtra added, "We’re delighted to further strengthen our relationship with Etihad Airways and Jet Airways.
This is a landmark agreement that will provide valuable support for Maharashtra Tourism’s global campaigns and marketing activities, as well as some of the industry’s most important trade and business events. This unique and important partnership between Maharashtra Tourism, Etihad Airways and Jet Airways will boost the state’s image exponentially."
James Hogan, Etihad Aviation Group President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Being part of one of the world’s largest economies, Maharashtra has plenty to offer to business and leisure travellers.
We are therefore delighted to expand our links to promote tourism to this vibrant state, which we have been serving with dedicated flights for 13 years."
"This agreement represents the first time a state government has ventured into such a tourism partnership with the airline industry, hence we appreciate the opportunity to work with our strategic Indian partner Jet Airways on this breakthrough agreement.
Our combined operation with Jet Airways between Abu Dhabi and Mumbai, complemented by Jet’s widespread domestic services, is further testament to the importance of Maharashtra on our route map."
Naresh Goyal, Chairman, Jet Airways, said, "It is a moment of both pride and honour that the Government of Maharashtra has chosen to join hands with Jet Airways and our strategic partner Etihad Airways in this unique initiative of leveraging our collective resources and impact for strengthening travel and tourism to the state."
"Mumbai is Jet Airways’ home hub and the airline shares a warm and emotional bond with Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra.
We operate our highest number of flights from the city and have always positioned and promoted Mumbai as the gateway to the state and the country. Our mutual network represents a huge market that can be potentially accessed in support of this initiative."
Maharashtra is home to a diverse range of tourist attractions, from beaches, caves, forts, wildlife, tiger reserves, national parks and hill stations, to monuments, palaces, festivals, places of worship, and adventure sports. Mumbai, the international gateway to Maharashtra, is the country’s financial hub and home to numerous museums, architectural heritage and Bollywood, the world’s largest film industry in terms of movie production.
Since Jet Airways began operations from Mumbai in 1993, the airline has flown millions of guests to and from its main hub over the past 24 years.
Mumbai was also the first Indian city to be served by Etihad Airways with the launch of daily flights in September 2004. A second daily service was introduced in November 2013, followed two years later by a third daily frequency.
Etihad Airways has carried more than two million guests on the route over the past 13 years with key inbound markets including Abu Dhabi, London, New York, San Francisco and Chicago.
Etihad Airways’ Indian network to and from Abu Dhabi covers 11 cities that also includes Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.
Jet Airways offers the additional Indian cities of Pune, Lucknow, Mangalore and Goa to Abu Dhabi, as well as numerous domestic connections.
During 2017, Jet Airways is scheduled to launch flights from Kannur and Chandigarh to Abu Dhabi, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals and completion of operational readiness at these airports.
Combined, both carriers operate over 250 flights each week between Abu Dhabi and 15 Indian cities.

Currently the airline which is considered as one of the biggest employers in the Seychelles provides employment opportunities to 787 staff of which 97% are Seychellois. This remarkable achievement is significant for Air Seychelles as it demonstrates the can-do attitude and the skill-set of our staff and the importance we place on human resources to further improve the capabilities and the future of our airline'.
Riard Balette, Manager Technical Quality and Safety at Air Seychelles, was amongst one of the staff honoured for working at the airline for 30 years.
During celebration he said: 'I am indeed very proud to share 30 years of my experience and expertise with Air Seychelles. I have always been fascinated by the aviation industry and the opportunities provided throughout the years of working for Air Seychelles have equipped me with the right skills and professional aptitude to progress further in my career'.
Rose-Marie Monthy was recognized for 20 years of service and sharing her experience with the airline, noted: 'I have taken great pride in working for the national airline and I am thrilled to have been part and witnessed the various developments which have enabled Air Seychelles to become a successful and reputable airline within the Indian Ocean. Having started my career back in 1996, amidst the ups and downs that any job brings along, today I am very grateful for the career opportunity Air Seychelles has offered me. Completing 20 years with Air Seychelles does not mean that I have reached the end of my career, I continue to provide my support towards the continuous growth of the airline and to ensure that Air Seychelles remains the pride of Seychelles'.
Ropatra Gonthier, Performance Standard and Training Manager in Guest Services, was recognized for more than 10 years of service at Air Seychelles.
She shared her experience of the airline’s growth, saying: 'The Air Seychelles airport operations have witness considerable improvement throughout the past ten years especially in areas of guest services. Currently the airline operation involves more than 350 domestic and over 60 international services per week and with the upcoming flight to Dusseldorf and Durban the operation will be more complex. Being witness and taking active part in this fantastic achievement and continuous progress has been a great experience for me'.
Air Seychelles is a Skytrax rated 4 star airline and operates a fleet of Airbus A330's, A320's besides six DHC Twin Otters for domestic services. The airline flies from Mahe to Beijing, Paris, Duesseldorf from mid 2017, Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Mauritius, Madagascar, Johannesburg and soon also to Durban.
The special awards ceremony took place in the VIP Lounge at the airport where the staff, who have all been with the company for over 10 to 40 years, were thanked for their years of service.
The group came from various airline departments including Ground Operations, Quality and Safety, Cabin Operations, Flight Operations, Procurement and Supply Chain, Guest Services, Revenue Management, Sales and Distribution, Planning and Finance, Human Resources, Technical Operations and Cargo.
Jean Weeling-Lee, Chairman of the Air Seychelles Board, said: 'On behalf of the Air Seychelles board I would like to extend my congratulations to the many Seychellois who have continued to support the national airline throughout the years. At Air Seychelles we strive to place people at the centre of development and your commitment has not only contributed towards the future growth of the airline but also towards the tourism industry which is one of the key drivers of the Seychelles economy'.

SEYCHELLES: Air Seychelles And Alitalia Partner In Codeshare Agreement
Air Seychelles and Alitalia, both Etihad partner airlines, have just inked an expanded codeshare deal under which Alitalia passengers can now connect on Mahe to both Antananarivo and Johannesburg and soon thereafter even Durban.
Under the agreement, Alitalia will place its AZ flight code on Air Seychelles’ four-times-a-week services to the Malagasy capital of Antananarivo and five flights to Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and commercial capital. Subject to government approvals, the Italian flag carrier will also codeshare on Air Seychelles’ upcoming twice-weekly flights to Durban, due to commence on 30th of March 2017.
Business and leisure travellers from Italy will be able to connect onto these services via Air Seychelles-operated flights from Abu Dhabi and Paris to Seychelles, using a single combined ticket for the entire journey.
Roy Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles, said: 'Our partnership with Alitalia continues to open up attractive travel options for holidaymakers in Italy, who can now fly with Air Seychelles to the fascinating island of Madagascar and South Africa.
Through this codeshare expansion, we have strengthened our route network and added more depth to our regional services, further increasing choice and convenience for travellers. We are confident this development will stimulate passenger and cargo traffic and, at the same time, strengthen the strong cultural, trade and diplomatic bonds between Seychelles, our neighbourly island of Madagascar and South Africa'.
Cramer Ball, Chief Executive Officer of Alitalia and one of Roy Kinnear's predecessors as CEO of Air Seychelles in turn responded: 'Deepening our codeshare cooperation with Air Seychelles brings important benefits to our guests, who now have dozens of new travel options from Italy to Madagascar and South Africa via Seychelles. With its one-of-a-kind wildlife and nature, Madagascar is an attractive holiday destination that offers a new and exciting experience for travellers in Italy.
In 2015 alone over 21,000 tourists visited Madagascar from Italy, a number which we are confident will rise with these new travel options. South Africa is a very attractive holiday destination, whose magnificent scenery, safaris and game parks are perfect for an outdoor adventure'.
Air Seychelles operates an Airbus A320 aircraft configured with 136 seats on its four times a week Antananarivo services, while its five times a week services to Johannesburg is operated using both an A320 aircraft and the wide-body A330, which offer 254 seats.
Flight schedule between Seychelles and Antananarivo. Flights are available for travel from 18th of January 2017

Etihad, Partners to Support Nearly 425,000 Jobs in Africa
Etihad Aviation Group (EAG) and its equity airline partners will support almost 425,000 jobs and are expected to contribute $3.6 billion GDP to the African economy in 2016, as Abu Dhabi becomes a key hub for business travel both into and out of the continent.
A report released by leading international research organisation Oxford Economics Group reveals that EAG and its partners make a substantial contribution to economic prosperity in Africa and throughout the global economy providing vital connections between leading commercial centres and emerging markets.
EAG and its partners will deliver a core economic contribution of $1.1 billion and a tourism contribution of $2.5 billion, said the report.
In turn, they will support 117,000 jobs through core operations, with another 308,000 jobs supported through the tourism contribution.
In 2016, Etihad Airways operates services to 117 passenger and cargo destinations around the world, and is expected to carry 19 million passengers on over 100,000 flights, among which almost 8,300 flights will be to and from Africa serving some 1.1 million passengers in the continent.
Since launching its first service to Egypt in 2004, Etihad Airways has expanded its operations across the African continent with the opening up of outstations in a further eight countries including South Africa, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania.
The core contribution of $1.1 billion includes the impact of EAG’s global operations, its capital spending in Africa, and the operational impact of its partners.
Among this, EAG’s global operations alone will make a $400 million contribution to the economy and sustain 39,700 jobs in 2016, mainly through purchases of products and services from African-based suppliers.
James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Aviation Group, said:
“Many jobs across the supply chain in hotels, ground transport companies, freight forwarders, catering, manufacturing, and throughout the tourism industry, all benefit from the presence of the Etihad Aviation Group, with suppliers in these sectors creating tremendous employment opportunities for emerging markets such as Africa.
“These contributions to economies in Africa are substantial. They are also an indication of the continued increase in travel into and out of Africa via our hub in Abu Dhabi, signalling the possibility for even more growth and prosperity across the continent in the future.”
The economic contribution of tourism facilitated by Etihad Airways and its partners is also quantified in the report.
The spending of the 1.1 million international visitors carried into Africa on Etihad Airways and its partners’ flights in 2016 will leave a considerable economic footprint.
This is estimated to contribute $2.5 billion in GDP for the continent, supporting some 308,000 jobs.
By 2024, the number of visitor arrivals carried into Africa by Etihad Airways and its partners is projected to rise to over 3.2 million.
As a result, the GDP contribution grows to $5.6 billion, sustaining 596,000 jobs in the continent’s economy. In addition to the economic contribution, the report also recognises the positive economic impact of the air connectivity Etihad Airways and its partners bring to the continent.
Together, Etihad Airways and its partners will provide a boost to African productivity equivalent to $1.1 billion in 2016. This level of activity is equivalent to 72,200 jobs in the economy.
The productivity boost rises to $2.2 billion by 2024, equating to an estimated 145,000 jobs. EAG was established in 2014 and comprises four business divisions – Etihad Airways, Etihad Engineering, Hala Group and Airline Equity Partners. The group owns minority investments in seven airlines: airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Jet Airways, Virgin Australia, and Swiss-based Darwin Airline, trading as Etihad Regional.
Hogan said: “Our partners play a vital role in driving our business in Africa. Thanks to their networks and infrastructure, we have been able to service Africa more efficiently. Our investment in partner airlines has driven our growth around the world and in Africa.

SEYCHELLES: Discover Serene Seychelles
With his menacing spear pointed right at me, the tall Maasai warrior slowly stalked closer. About two feet away, he froze; his rugged, red ochre-covered face and piercing glare filled my viewfinder. As I peeked out from behind my camera, his clenched jaw quickly relaxed into a wide grin with gleaming teeth.
Surprisingly, my Maasai interaction didn’t happen in some remote Kenyan village but at Carnival International de Victoria in the Seychelles. Each April, traditionally dressed revelers from around the globe descend on the Seychelles to strut their stuff on the streets of Victoria, the capital. This year’s three-day extravaganza featured more than 1,500 participants from 27 countries and included tumbling Chinese acrobats, scantily clad Brazilian samba girls, Himalayan musicians, Maasai tribesmen, Indonesian dancers and even a few high-stepping cowboy cheerleaders from the United States.
“It’s called Carnival International, which means the world is coming together,” says Alain St. Ainge, the country’s minister of tourism and culture. “Even the United Nations, when they meet, you find politics overtakes the important things of listening to each other. In the Seychelles, people come here and forget their politics, forget religion, forget the color of skin.”
Like ivory-fringed emeralds scattered across a turquoise cloth, the Seychelles brings new meaning to the words “unique” and “paradise.” Scattered across 155,000 square miles of Indian Ocean a few degrees south of the equator, Africa’s smallest nation lies strategically between Africa and Asia and truly lives up to its unique international “crossroads” reputation by attracting visitors and residents from every corner of the globe. Unlike its more Indo-cultured neighbors Mauritius and Madagascar, the Seychelles tilts more to an African heritage.
Of course, Carnival is only one of the country’s many distractions, and with 115 islands to choose from, you’re bound to find one that fits your definition of paradise. Of the 42 permanently inhabited islands, Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Cousine, Frégate and North Island attract the most visitors. It goes without saying, they’re each unique. As such, the Seychelles remains a favorite decompression destination for the rich, the famous and royalty. Prince William and Kate Middleton, now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, honeymooned here in 2011.
Home to 90 percent of the country’s population, rugged, granite-topped Mahé is blanketed in tropical rainforest and fringed with postcard bays and white-sand beaches. As the most developed of the islands, it operates as the major port of entry and transit point for travelers heading to the other islands.
The country’s unique melting-pot culture is most apparent in its capital, Victoria — especially in the local market, where you’ll find a wide variety of food, produce, textiles and crafts from across Africa, Asia and other Indian Ocean nations. A throwback from its British Colonial days, a scaled-down 1903 replica of London’s famous Houses of Parliament clock tower stands as a focal point of the city.
Outside of town, luxury resorts hug most of the island’s top beaches. For a more intimate setting, try Anse Soleil beach on the southwest coast. It boasts only a small beach bar and attracts those wanting to escape more popular beaches.
Although its beautiful coastline and beaches beckon, Mahé’s splendid Morne Seychellois National Park offers a look at the island’s interior. The park contains four vegetation zones stretching from coastal mangrove forests to the peak of Morne Seychellois (the island’s highest point at 2,970 feet). Created in 1979, the park’s 12 miles of walking trails provide access to historic sites, grand vistas and unique flora and fauna.
From Mahé many visitors hop on the one-hour ferry or a 20-minute flight to Praslin, the nation’s second-largest island. Besides an abundance of stylish upscale resorts, gin-clear waters and Anse Lazio (the magnificent strand of white sand Giorgio Armani rates the world’s best beach), Praslin also contains two UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Aldabra Atoll is the world’s largest raised coral atoll and home to a large population of indigenous giant tortoises. The second UNESCO site, the lush Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, features 6,000 native coco de mer palm trees. Averaging almost 40 pounds, the tree’s coco de mer nut is the world’s largest.
Like a tropical paradise magazine ad, laid-back La Digue, a 30-minute ferry ride from Praslin, bewitches visitors with seductive ribbons of soft white sand fringed by lush tropical jungle and jade-green waters. At Anse Source d’Argent, probably the country’s most photographed beach (a favorite in most travel brochures), towering weathered granite boulders scatter across classic white sands. However, the more secluded sensuous arcs of Grand Anse and Petite Anse on the island’s southeast coast remain favorite sandy spots with fashion photographers and their bikini-clad beauties.
La Digue’s main forms of transportation are bicycles and ox-carts, making it a retreat suited more to nature lovers than jet-setters. Its many secluded bays provide the perfect stranded-in-paradise backdrop for those seeking privacy, while the Veuve Nature Reserve in the island’s interior hosts the rare endemic black paradise flycatcher (only about 100 remain). Along the southwest coast, you can explore the old L’Union Estate plantation and copra-processing factory (now an open-air museum). A few dozen 100-year-old giant tortoises also reside at the estate.
As a multi-island destination, the Seychelles offers a wide variety of unique amenities and experiences that appeal to even the most discerning traveler. And as Alain St. Ainge says, the country’s distinctiveness continues to evolve: “We welcome visitors. When they come to the Seychelles, they impart aspects of their own cultures, which in turn add to our cultural mélange and uniqueness.”
Seychelles International Airport is on Mahé, about seven miles southeast of Victoria. Buses run every 20–30 minutes from the terminal to the main bus station in Victoria (about 60 minutes). Bus fare to most resorts runs about $1–2. An airport taxi to Victoria, your resort or the ferry terminal costs $7–10. Many resorts offer airport transfers for guests. In 2012, the national carrier, Air Seychelles, reduced its long-haul flights after making a codeshare arrangement with Etihad Airways. Although most international passengers now arrive via Abu Dhabi or Dubai, Air Seychelles still flies to many international gateways such as Geneva (GVA), Berlin (TXL), Bangkok (BKK) and Cape Town (CPT). The adjoining domestic terminal offers plane and heli-flights to neighboring islands.

SEYCHELLES: Expansion Of Airport To Cater For More Visitors
Seychelles, one of the Vanilla Island organization's members, last year saw arrivals rise by 19 percent over the year 2014 to more than 275.000 tourists. This year, according to figures mentioned by Tourism Minister Alain St. Ange, have arrivals compared already surged by a further 11 percent for the first three months of 2016 over the record breaking year 2015.
In order to accommodate future growth have several work elements at the international airport been completed or are in progress, including the expansion of the domestic flight terminal, from where some 200 scheduled flights between Mahe and Praslin by Air Seychelles leave and arrive, besides many more air-charters to some of the more remote tourist islands.
Foreign and Transport Minister Joel Morgan therefore visited the airport with a team of experts from Civil Aviation and other government bodies to assess progress and get first hand information about the state of construction.
The international arrivals lounge is being expanded by over 800 square metres added space, which will see immigration service, the island's tourism board and protocol services get new and larger spaces while giving arriving passengers, especially when more than one flight arrive at the same time, much more space while waiting to be processed.
This work is due to be completed, and the new facilities commissioned, by mid 2016.
Work is also progressing at the international departure lounge and. if possible, will be looked over by this correspondent when departing later this week from the Seychelles back to the African mainland.
Information at hand suggests that major work at both arrival and departure lounge extensions should be nearing completion by mid year and that final touches will be completed by end 2016.
Minister Morgan again reiterated what he had repeatedly said before that visitors to the Seychelles should enjoy a five star experience from the moment they land to the moment they depart, hence the need to upgrade, refurbish and enlarge existing facilities.
The various projects were valued at approximately 10 million US Dollars, all financed by the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority.

Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based national airline of the United Arab Emirates, waslast night named Airline of the Year 2016 by the prestigious US-based aviation industry publication Air Transport World (ATW).
Leading international industry publication honours Abu Dhabi carrier for its unique growth strategy.
Etihad Airways was chosen for the top honour by ATW’s editorial board in a highly contested competition, with entries from more than 100 airlines around the world. The award recognises Etihad Airways’ clearvision;its successful organic growth supplemented by a unique partnership strategy; its commercial focus which has delivered net profits in each of the last four years; the rapid growth of its highly motivated workforce; its development of innovative products and services, including The Residence by Etihad™; and the airline’s strong executive leadership.
Air Transport World Editor-in-Chief Karen Walker said: “I am absolutely delighted to recognise Etihad Airways as ATW’s Airline of the Year 2016. In a fiercely competitive market where much ends up looking the same, James Hogan and his team prove that you can set your airline apart through innovative thinking, creative customer products and a fierce adherence to delivering against a clear vision. I congratulate Etihad Airways for a most deserving achievement.”
James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ President and Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of the 27,000 employees of the Etihad Airways group around the world. I applaud their commitment, dedication and hard work in pursuit of our goal to be the world’s best airline.”
ATW’s Airline Industry Achievement Awards were created in 1974 to recognise excellence across a broad range of airline operations and are widely considered as the most coveted in the aviation industry. The magazine is based in the United States with an editorial team that reaches across the world.
News of the award was announced during a reception hosted in New York last nightby Etihad Airways to mark the arrival of its award-winning Airbus A380 daily service from Abu Dhabi to America’s financial capital.
Following a carefully planned strategy of organic growth and strategic investments in selected airlines around the world, Etihad Airways has rapidly developed into an airline of choice, setting benchmarks in service and hospitality, with innovation at the core of its business.
Etihad Airways was recognised by ATW’s editorial board for “fast but thoughtful growth, consistently delivering against its targets and always thinking ahead.” The airline was also applauded for its “excellent numbers on financials, cargo and safety”; its unique partnership strategy that was paying dividends; a willingness to be bold in equity tie-ups boosting the number over the past 12 months to include Etihad Regional and Alitalia;and its strategy of developing ground-breaking strategic contracts with suppliers.
ATWalso spoke highly of Etihad Airways’ “consistently diplomatic, dignified and assured response to attacks by US airlines on Gulf carriers” in which Etihad Airways had developed a powerful defence of its business model and strategy. ATW said Etihad Airways’ executive team, led by President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan, had maintained the high road and, in doing so, demonstrated industry leadership beyond the company mandate.
James Hogan added: “There have been attacks on our business model but we have chosen to let our service, our routes and our competitive offer do the talking.
“Etihad Airways is not about being the biggest – it is about being the best. It has been a long road to success but we have shown it is possible to change the aviation landscape. I thank ATW for this award, the most highly-regarded in our industry.”
Mr Hogan said Etihad Airways constantly shifted the goalposts in service and product offerings, as demonstrated by last week’s arrival of the airline’s first US service featuring its award-winning Airbus A380s, now flying to New York’s JFK International Airport. The A380, which made its US debut on 23 November, features The Residence by Etihad™ – the commercial airline industry’s only three-room suite with its own butler. And this week, Etihad Airways opened a new lounge for First and Business Class passengers at JFK International Airport – the airline’s second premium facility in the United States – reinforcing its commitment to investing in theguest travel experience on the ground.
Over the past 12 months, Etihad Airways also launched its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner – the first of 71 on order – and inducted the first of 10 Airbus A380 aircraft into its fleet.
A key part of Etihad Airways’ unique growth strategy has been to strike equity partnerships with other airlines. This year, it took a 49 per cent stake in Italian carrier Alitalia in a game-changing deal. This added to minority stakes in airberlin, Jet Airways, Virgin Australia, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles and Etihad Regional.
The airline launched six new routes on three continents during 2015taking its global network of destinations to 116 with a fleet of 120 aircraft. More than 17 million guests are expected to travel on Etihad Airways by the end of 2015, up from almost 15 million last year, while the airline maintain sits focus on profitability.
Air Transport World is an authoritative monthly magazine serving the needs of the global airline and commercial air transport manufacturing communities. Its renowned editors have been nominated for nearly every major aviation journalism award available thanks to their balanced coverage of the airline industry and incisive reports on trends.
The Airline of the Year award will be presented at a Gala Dinner at the 42nd edition of the annual ATW Airline Industry Achievement Awards taking place during the Singapore Air Show on 15 February 2016.

Etihad Airways’ CEO, James Hogan Among Influential Business Travel Executives
James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has been recognized as one of the 25 most influential business travel executives by Business Travel News (BTN), the premier industry publication for corporate travel news. The 2015 list of industry honorees was announced last night at The BTN Group’s Business Travel Trends & Forecasts conference in New York City.
This year’s publication marks the 32nd annual list of Business Travel News’ most influential business travel executives. This prestigious listing recognizes those who have most influenced the business travel industry over the past year.
“BTN identified Mr. Hogan early in the year as a person to watch,” said Elizabeth West, Business Travel News’ Editor-In-Chief. “Completing Etihad’s purchase of a 49 percent stake in Alitalia last December underscored his dedication to a bold equity alliance strategy. This, along with his continued effort to place downward pressure on long-haul airfares, have earned him a spot on our annual list.”
James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “Etihad Airways and our 27,000 employees worldwide are reinventing the air travel experience, bringing competition, world-class hospitality and revolutionary new products to our guests, while providing access to parts of the world that would otherwise go underserved or unserved.”
Mr. Hogan continued: “We are not about being the biggest – Etihad Airways has always been about being the best and, through our three-prong strategy of organic growth, codeshares and equity partners, Etihad Airways has been able to compete effectively with carriers much longer established and much larger in size. I thank Business Travel News and I extend my congratulations to my fellow honorees.”
Mr. Hogan was appointed President and Chief Executive of Etihad Airways in September 2006 and has more than 30 years of travel industry expertise. He has since overseen the rapid growth of the airline, which included the launch of six new routes on three continents during 2015, taking its global network of destinations to 116 with a fleet of 120 aircraft with more than 200 aircraft on firm order. The airline operates an expanding network of passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
A key part of Etihad Airways’ unique growth strategy has been to take equity stakes in other airlines. This year, it took a 49 per cent stake in Italian carrier Alitalia, adding to minority stakes in airberlin, Jet Airways, Virgin Australia, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles and Etihad Regional.
In the past few years, Etihad Airways has made significant advances including introducing innovative services that span the globe, including its signature Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 aircraft which offer unparalleled comfort and luxury, such as The Residence by Etihad™, the only three-room suite in the sky (A380), First Class Apartments (A380), First Suites (B787) and Economy Smart Seats (A380 and B787), for its guests – of which more than 17 million are expected to travel on Etihad Airways by the end of 2015, up from almost 15 million last year.
From Abu Dhabi to the United States, Etihad Airways serves New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport with a twice daily service, including the new A380 service with The Residence™ and a daily B787 flight to Washington’s Dulles International Airport. The airline also operates flights to Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
In addition to this recognition for Mr. Hogan, Etihad Airways was just named 2016 Airline of the Year by Air Transport World. Other recent awards include Best First Class Product by Ultratravel U.S.A. readers in the 2015 Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards (ULTRAs) and Best Airline – Business Class by TTG Travel Awards 2015 — among many others.
