SOUTH AFRICA: Bail Date For Drugs Murderer

The Guatamalan man who stands accused of murdering American tourist Gabriela Kabrins Alban, 39, at a Camps Bay boutique hotel is set to make his second court appearance this week.

Diego Novella, 41, has been transferred to the hospital section at the Pollsmoor Prison, his lawyer William Booth said this weekend. Booth said Novella had been injured and was receiving medical attention.

Novella is set to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where a formal bail application hearing is expected.

Alban, a marketing executive from Los Angeles, was found dead on Wednesday afternoon in the room she had apparently shared with Novella, said to be her boyfriend.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila yesterday said it appeared the “couple was on holiday in Cape Town”.

He confirmed that Novella had made a brief court appearance on Friday and the case was postponed for further investigation.

“More charges are likely to be added at a later stage,” said Ntabazalila.

While authorities remain tight-lipped as to how Alban was killed, details have emerged alleging that drugs fuelled what transpired in the hotel room in Camps Bay.
