Currently, Yangon's only five-star hotel is The Strand, a Victorian build from 1901 on the banks of the Yangon River, which is commonly listed as one of Asia's top historic hotels. Last year, the Peninsula announced plans to open in the capital by 2021.
Prime Residence has appointed Rosewood Hotels & Resorts to manage the Rosewood Yangon, which is scheduled to open in winter 2018.
The company established by Kanok Furniture and Decoration of Thailand and Jewellery Luck Group of Myanmar originally planned for Kempinski Hotels to operate the property as the Heritage Hotel Kempinski Yangon.
However, Rosewood announced on June 20, 2018 it will operate the new hotel as the company’s first property in Myanmar and sixth in Asia.
We are thrilled to partner with Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and bring this prestigious ultra-luxury brand to Myanmar, Supalak Foong, MD of Prime Residence, said in a statement.
Our two companies share an unswerving dedication to detail that can be seen in this beautiful, one-of-a-kind property. In this emerging, culturally vibrant destination, Rosewood Yangon will help to bring the beauty of Myanmar to the world stage.
The 209-room Rosewood Yangon will be in the New Law Courts heritage building, which was constructed in 1927 by architect Thomas Oliphant and Doorman Long UK.
Yangon's New Law Courts is the first building to receive approval from Yangon Heritage Trust for restoration under the Conservation Management Plan.
The Rosewood Yangon will be in the center of the city’s historic district near the Bogyoke Aung San Market, the Yangon River and the Schwedagon Pagoda.
With its stunning vistas, awe-inspiring architecture, rich history and culture, Myanmar and Yangon are perfect examples of a Rosewood destination, and we look forward to introducing our affluential explorers to this destination, Sonia Cheng, CEO of Rosewood Hotel Group, said in a statement.
Already an emerging regional business center, Yangon is a wonderfully dynamic city with deep cultural traditions and is a perfect gateway for our discerning guests to discover the wonderful landscapes and culture of Myanmar.
The Rosewood Yangon will join the hotel company’s portfolio of Asian properties, including the Rosewood Beijing, the Rosewood Phuket in Thailand and the Rosewood Sanya in China.
The upcoming opening of the Rosewood Yangon will follow the opening of the Rosewood Luang Prabang in Laos, the Rosewood Phnom Penh in Cambodia and the Rosewood Baha Mar in the Bahamas.
Additional properties scheduled to open this winter include the Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, Calif., the Rosewood Bangkok, Thailand, the Rosewood Guangzhou and the Rosewood Hong Kong in China.
Rosewood Yangon will be the brand’s first property in Myanmar and sixth in Asia. Located on The Strand in the heart of the city’s historic district, it is a perfect getaway to discover the wonderful landscapes and culture of Myanmar.
The hotel will feature 209 spacious guestrooms, suites and 1 to 2 bedroom apartment units, where guests can take in views of the majestic Yangon River or the beautiful landscaped internal courtyards.
It will also offer five distinct dining venues featuring local, Asian, and internationally-influenced cuisine.
Additional amenities will include extensive event venues and leisure facilities over three floors with spa, gym, yoga / Pilates studio, and a rooftop pool.
Housed in a stunning heritage building that was originally constructed in 1927, as the New Law Courts, Rosewood Yangon is the most significant historic restoration project in Yangon to date, where great care has been taken to restore both the exterior and interior to its former glory.
